Tests Details :
USG – TEMPORAL ARTERY DOPPLER is a specialized ultrasound examination that uses Doppler imaging to assess blood flow and structural changes in the temporal arteries located on the sides of the head. The scan is commonly performed to detect signs of inflammation or reduced blood flow associated with temporal arteritis, also known as giant cell arteritis.
During the examination, high-frequency sound waves are used to visualize the temporal arteries and evaluate vessel wall thickness, blood flow patterns, narrowing, or blockage. A characteristic “halo sign” may indicate inflammation of the artery walls.
This scan is often recommended for individuals experiencing symptoms such as persistent headaches, scalp tenderness, jaw pain while chewing, vision disturbances, or unexplained fever and elevated inflammatory markers. Early diagnosis is important because untreated temporal arteritis can lead to serious complications, including vision loss.
Temporal artery Doppler ultrasound is non-invasive, painless, radiation-free, and helps support early diagnosis and treatment planning.
This scan is performed to:
- Evaluate the temporal arteries for inflammation
- Detect temporal arteritis (giant cell arteritis)
- Assess blood flow in the temporal arteries
- Identify vessel narrowing or blockage
- Investigate headaches, scalp tenderness, or jaw pain
- Support diagnosis of vascular inflammatory conditions
- Assist in treatment monitoring and follow-up
