Tests Details :
MRI – CSF Rhinorrhoea is an advanced imaging procedure designed to identify and evaluate leaks of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the skull base into the nasal cavity. It uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce high-resolution images of the brain, skull base, sinuses, and surrounding soft tissues.
This scan is highly effective in detecting the exact site and extent of CSF leakage, which may occur due to trauma, surgery, infections, congenital defects, or spontaneous causes. It helps visualize defects in the skull base and any associated meningeal or brain tissue herniation (encephalocele).
MRI is particularly useful because it provides excellent soft tissue contrast without radiation exposure. It plays a crucial role in diagnosis, surgical planning, and preventing complications such as meningitis. The procedure is safe, non-invasive, and painless.
This test is recommended for individuals:
- With clear watery nasal discharge suspected to be CSF
- After head injury or skull base trauma
- Following nasal or sinus surgery
- With recurrent meningitis of unknown cause
- Suspected of skull base defects or leaks
- Requiring detailed evaluation before surgical repair
