Tests Details :
MRI – Craniovertebral Junction (CVJ) is an advanced imaging procedure that focuses on the area where the base of the skull (occiput) meets the upper cervical spine (atlas and axis). It uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of bones, ligaments, spinal cord, brainstem, and surrounding soft tissues.
This scan is highly effective in diagnosing congenital abnormalities (such as Chiari malformation), instability, trauma, compression of the spinal cord or brainstem, tumors, infections, and inflammatory conditions affecting the CVJ region. It is commonly recommended for patients with symptoms like neck pain, headaches, neurological deficits, dizziness, or difficulty in coordination.
MRI provides excellent soft tissue contrast and allows accurate visualization of critical structures, helping in early diagnosis, surgical planning, and monitoring of treatment outcomes. The procedure is safe, painless, and does not involve radiation.
This test is recommended for individuals:
- Experiencing persistent neck pain or headaches
- With neurological symptoms such as dizziness or weakness
- Suspected of congenital abnormalities of the CVJ
- With history of trauma to the head or neck
- Showing signs of spinal cord or brainstem compression
- Requiring detailed evaluation of the upper spine region
