The Indirect Coombs Test (Indirect Antiglobulin Test) is a blood test that detects antibodies present in the serum that may react against red blood cells (RBCs). These antibodies can cause destruction of RBCs if incompatible blood is transfused or during certain pregnancy conditions.
This test is commonly used in pre-transfusion testing to ensure compatibility between donor and recipient blood. It is also important in pregnancy to detect antibodies in the mother that may attack the fetus’s red blood cells, leading to hemolytic disease of the newborn.
The purpose of this test is to:
- Detect antibodies against red blood cells in the serum
- Ensure compatibility before blood transfusion
- Identify risk of hemolytic disease in newborns
- Support diagnosis of immune-related hemolytic conditions
