The HSV 1 & 2 IgG test is a blood test that detects IgG antibodies produced by the immune system in response to Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) infection. It typically assesses exposure to HSV-1 and HSV-2, which can cause oral or genital herpes.

IgG antibodies generally develop after infection and can remain in the body for a long time. Therefore, a positive result usually indicates previous or established exposure to HSV, but it does not by itself indicate when the infection occurred or whether the virus is currently active.

1. What does a positive HSV-1 or HSV-2 IgG result mean?
A positive IgG result generally indicates that the person has been exposed to the corresponding HSV type and has developed antibodies. It does not necessarily mean there is an active outbreak.

2. Does HSV IgG tell me when I got herpes?
No. The IgG test cannot reliably determine when the infection occurred. A positive result may reflect an infection acquired in the past.
