The Osmotic Fragility Test is a diagnostic blood test used to evaluate the stability and integrity of red blood cells (RBCs) when exposed to different concentrations of saline solution. It measures how easily RBCs rupture (hemolyze) under osmotic stress.
This test is particularly useful in diagnosing hereditary spherocytosis, a condition where red blood cells are more fragile and prone to destruction. It may also be used to assess other hemolytic anemias and red cell membrane disorders.
