HBV DNA – QUALITATIVE
This Test is a molecular diagnostic test used to detect the presence of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) genetic material (DNA) in the blood. This test helps confirm whether the virus is actively present in the body.
Recommended For
- Individuals with suspected Hepatitis B infection
- Patients with positive HBsAg or abnormal liver tests
- People with symptoms like jaundice, fatigue, or abdominal pain
- Individuals at risk of HBV infection
- Patients advised for confirmatory viral testing
HBV DNA – QUALITATIVE Test Purpose
The HBV DNA – Qualitative test is a molecular blood test that detects the genetic material (DNA) of the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) using nucleic acid amplification/PCR-based methods. Unlike a quantitative HBV DNA test, the qualitative test reports whether HBV DNA is detected or Not Detected, rather than providing a viral load number.
The test can provide supportive evidence of current HBV infection and may be useful when hepatitis B serology results are unclear or when viral replication needs to be assessed. HBV DNA testing is also used in the evaluation and monitoring of people with chronic hepatitis B, particularly alongside other markers such as HBsAg, HBeAg, anti-HBc, ALT, and quantitative HBV DNA when appropriate.
A Detected result indicates that HBV DNA is detectable in the blood sample. A Not Detected result means that HBV DNA was not detected above the assay’s detection limit at the time of testing; it does not necessarily exclude very low-level infection. Clinical interpretation should therefore consider other hepatitis B tests and the patient’s medical history.
HBV DNA – QUALITATIVE Test is for Individuals:
- Individuals with suspected Hepatitis B infection
- People with a positive or reactive HBsAg result requiring further evaluation
- Individuals with inconclusive or conflicting hepatitis B serology
- Patients with known chronic Hepatitis B infection
- Individuals being evaluated for viral replication
- Patients undergoing assessment before or during antiviral treatment
- Individuals requiring follow-up to assess response to treatment
- Patients with abnormal liver tests suggestive of possible hepatitis
- Individuals whose healthcare provider recommends molecular testing for HBV
FAQs
1. What does a positive HBV DNA Qualitative result mean?
A Detected result means that HBV DNA has been detected in the blood, providing evidence of current HBV infection. The result should be interpreted together with hepatitis B serology, liver function tests, symptoms, and other clinical findings.
2. What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative HBV DNA testing?
A qualitative HBV DNA test reports whether the virus is detected or not detected. A quantitative HBV DNA test measures the amount of virus in the blood, usually reported as IU/mL, and is particularly useful for assessing treatment eligibility and monitoring treatment response.
3. Is fasting required for the HBV DNA Qualitative test?
Generally, fasting is not required for this blood test. Follow any specific instructions provided by your healthcare provider or diagnostic laboratory.
