The Hepatitis B Virus – Anti-HBe (Envelope Antibody) Test is a blood test used to detect antibodies against the Hepatitis B envelope antigen (HBeAg). The presence of Anti-HBe usually indicates a lower level of viral replication and reduced infectivity.

The Hepatitis B Virus – Anti-HBe (HBeAg Envelope Antibody) test detects antibodies against the hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) in the blood. Anti-HBe is one of the markers used to understand the phase and activity of hepatitis B virus infection.

During the course of HBV infection, the development of Anti-HBe may occur as HBeAg levels decrease or become undetectable. This process, known as seroconversion, can be associated with a reduction in viral replication in many patients. However, the presence of Anti-HBe does not always mean that the virus is no longer replicating.

The result is therefore usually interpreted together with HBeAg, HBsAg, HBV DNA (viral load), liver function tests, and other hepatitis B markers. This helps healthcare providers assess disease activity and monitor patients with chronic hepatitis B.

FAQs

1. What does a positive Anti-HBe result mean?
A positive Anti-HBe result indicates that antibodies against HBeAg are present. It may occur after HBeAg disappears and can indicate HBeAg seroconversion, but it does not by itself prove that HBV replication has stopped.

2. Is Anti-HBe the same as Anti-HBs?
No. Anti-HBe antibodies target the hepatitis B e antigen, while Anti-HBs antibodies target the hepatitis B surface antigen and are associated with immunity to hepatitis B. They provide different information about HBV infection.

3. Can Anti-HBe be positive when HBV DNA is still detectable?
Yes. Some people can have detectable HBV DNA despite being Anti-HBe positive. Therefore, Anti-HBe should be interpreted alongside HBV DNA, HBeAg, HBsAg, liver enzymes, and other clinical findings.
