EPSTEIN- BARR VIRUS ANTIBODY IGG TO VIRAL CAPSID ANTIGEN (VCA) Test

The Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) VCA IgG antibody test detects IgG antibodies against the viral capsid antigen (VCA) of Epstein-Barr virus. EBV is a very common virus and is the primary cause of infectious mononucleosis.

VCA IgG antibodies generally develop during the acute phase of EBV infection and usually remain detectable for life. Therefore, a positive result commonly indicates that a person has been exposed to EBV at some point in the past. By itself, VCA IgG cannot reliably distinguish between a recent and a past infection.

The test is often interpreted along with other EBV antibodies, such as VCA IgM and EBNA IgG, to help determine the likely stage of infection. It may be useful when evaluating symptoms such as prolonged fatigue, fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, or suspected infectious mononucleosis.
