Smear for Gonococci

The Smear for Gonococci test is a microscopic examination used to detect the presence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacterium responsible for gonorrhea, a sexually transmitted infection (STI).

A sample is collected from the affected site, such as the urethra, cervix, throat, or rectum, and stained for examination under a microscope. The presence of characteristic bacteria helps in rapid preliminary diagnosis.

This test is commonly used as an initial screening method and may be followed by culture or molecular tests for confirmation and antibiotic sensitivity testing.
