The Prothrombin Time (PT) test is a blood test used to evaluate how quickly blood forms a clot. It specifically measures the function of clotting factors in the extrinsic and common pathways of the coagulation system.

This test is commonly used to assess bleeding disorders, monitor patients on anticoagulant therapy (such as warfarin), and evaluate liver function, as many clotting factors are produced in the liver.

Prolonged PT may indicate clotting factor deficiencies, liver disease, vitamin K deficiency, or the effect of anticoagulant medications. The test is often reported along with INR (International Normalized Ratio) for standardized results.

The purpose of this test is to

  • To measure blood clotting time
  • To assess coagulation function
  • To monitor anticoagulant therapy
  • To detect bleeding or clotting disorders
  • To evaluate liver function

Tests Preparation :

Consult your doctor. No fasting is usually required Inform your doctor about medications (especially blood thinners) Do not stop medications unless advised by your doctor Follow any specific instructions given by your healthcare provider

The Prothrombin Time (PT) test measures how long blood takes to clot and helps assess bleeding and clotting disorders.
