The Protein – CSF test is used to measure the amount of protein present in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the clear fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. Normally, protein levels in CSF are low, and elevated levels may indicate underlying neurological conditions.
Increased CSF protein levels can be associated with infections such as meningitis, inflammatory conditions, bleeding in the brain, or disorders affecting the central nervous system. Low levels are less common but may also provide diagnostic information.
The test is typically performed as part of a CSF analysis following a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) and is used along with other tests to provide a comprehensive evaluation of neurological health.
The purpose of this test is to
- To measure protein levels in cerebrospinal fluid
- To help diagnose infections like meningitis
- To evaluate neurological and inflammatory conditions
- To detect central nervous system disorders
- To support comprehensive CSF analysis
