The Plasma Metanephrine test is a blood test used to measure the levels of metanephrines, which are metabolites of catecholamines (adrenaline and noradrenaline). These substances are produced by the adrenal glands and play a key role in regulating blood pressure and stress response.
Elevated levels of metanephrines may indicate the presence of rare adrenal tumors such as pheochromocytoma or paraganglioma. These tumors can cause excessive production of hormones, leading to symptoms like high blood pressure, headaches, sweating, and rapid heart rate.
The purpose of this test is to
- To measure metanephrine levels in the blood
- To help diagnose pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma
- To evaluate adrenal gland function
- To investigate causes of unexplained high blood pressure
- To monitor treatment and detect recurrence
