The LE Cell Detection test is a diagnostic blood test used to identify the presence of lupus erythematosus (LE) cells. These cells are formed when white blood cells engulf the nucleus of another cell that has been altered by autoimmune activity.

This test was historically used in the diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues and organs.

This test is recommended for individuals who have:

  • Symptoms of lupus such as joint pain, skin rashes, or fatigue
  • Unexplained fever or inflammation

  • Positive or borderline results in other autoimmune tests
