The Indirect Bilirubin Test measures the level of unconjugated (indirect) bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment produced during the breakdown of red blood cells.
Indirect bilirubin is formed before it reaches the liver for processing. Elevated levels may indicate excessive breakdown of red blood cells (hemolysis), liver dysfunction, or conditions where the liver is unable to properly process bilirubin.
The purpose of this test is to:
- Measure indirect (unconjugated) bilirubin levels
- Assess liver function and bilirubin metabolism
- Detect hemolytic disorders and jaundice
- Support diagnosis of liver-related conditions
