HEPATITIS C VIRUS ANTIBODY (ANTI-HCV), IGM & IGG Test

The Hepatitis C Virus Antibody (Anti-HCV), IgM & IgG test detects antibodies produced by the immune system in response to hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection.

Testing for HCV antibodies can help identify whether an individual has been exposed to hepatitis C. However, the presence of antibodies does not by itself confirm an active infection because antibodies can remain detectable even after the virus has been cleared or successfully treated.

Anti-HCV testing may be used during screening or when hepatitis C infection is suspected. If antibodies are detected, an HCV RNA test (PCR/NAT) is generally needed to determine whether the virus is currently present in the blood.

1. What does a positive Anti-HCV IgM & IgG result mean?
A positive result indicates that antibodies against HCV have been detected, suggesting previous or current exposure to hepatitis C. It does not, by itself, confirm an active infection.

2. What is the difference between HCV IgM and IgG antibodies?
IgM and IgG are different types of antibodies produced by the immune system. However, HCV antibody testing is not generally used to reliably distinguish acute from chronic hepatitis C based solely on IgM versus IgG. HCV RNA testing is more useful for confirming active infection.

3. What test is needed after a positive Anti-HCV result?
