GAD ANTIBODY test

The GAD Antibody (Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase Antibody) test detects antibodies produced by the immune system against glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), an enzyme found in insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells and certain nerve cells.

The test is primarily used to help identify autoimmune diabetes, particularly Type 1 diabetes and Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA). GAD antibodies may be present even when diabetes is initially diagnosed as Type 2, making the test useful when the type of diabetes is uncertain.
