FIBRINOGEN DEGRADATION PRODUCT Test

The Fibrinogen Degradation Product (FDP) test measures substances produced when fibrinogen and fibrin are broken down by the body's fibrinolytic system. FDP levels can increase when there is increased formation and breakdown of blood clots.

The test may be used as part of the evaluation of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and other conditions involving abnormal activation of the clotting and fibrinolytic systems. FDP results are usually interpreted together with D-dimer, PT/INR, aPTT, platelet count, and fibrinogen levels.

An elevated FDP level is not specific to one condition and can occur in several clinical situations. Therefore, the result should always be interpreted in the context of the patient's symptoms and other laboratory findings.
