FECAL CALPROTECTIN Test

The Fecal Calprotectin test measures the level of calprotectin, a protein released by certain white blood cells (neutrophils), in a stool sample. Increased calprotectin levels can indicate inflammation in the intestines.

The test is commonly used to help differentiate inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, from non-inflammatory conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It may also be useful for assessing the severity of intestinal inflammation and monitoring people who have already been diagnosed with IBD.

A high calprotectin result indicates that intestinal inflammation may be present, but the test cannot identify the exact cause.
