The Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) Antibody IgG to Viral Capsid Antigen (VCA) Test is a blood test used to detect IgG antibodies produced in response to EBV infection. These antibodies typically appear during the acute phase of infection and remain in the body for life.

EBV is a common virus associated with infectious mononucleosis (“mono”) and other conditions. The presence of VCA IgG antibodies generally indicates a past infection, though it may also be present during later stages of an active infection.

The purpose of this test is to:

  • Detect IgG antibodies against EBV viral capsid antigen
  • Identify past exposure to Epstein-Barr virus
  • Assist in determining the stage of EBV infection
  • Support diagnosis of infectious mononucleosis
  • Help differentiate between recent and past infections when used with other tests
