CHROMOGRANIN – A Test

The Chromogranin A (CgA) Test is a blood test that measures the level of Chromogranin A, a protein released by neuroendocrine cells found throughout the body. These cells are present in organs such as the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, lungs, and adrenal glands. Elevated Chromogranin A levels may indicate the presence of neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) and can provide valuable information about tumor activity and disease progression.

This test is commonly used to support the diagnosis, monitoring, and follow-up of neuroendocrine tumors, including carcinoid tumors, pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, pheochromocytomas, and certain adrenal gland tumors. It also helps healthcare providers assess the effectiveness of treatment and detect possible tumor recurrence after therapy. However, Chromogranin A is not a standalone diagnostic test, and elevated levels can also occur in conditions such as chronic kidney disease, liver disease, inflammatory disorders, chronic atrophic gastritis, and with the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) used to treat acid reflux.
