Pulmonary Function Test (PFT), commonly known as Spirometry, is a diagnostic test used to evaluate how well the lungs are working. It measures the amount of air a person can inhale and exhale, as well as how quickly air can be expelled from the lungs.

During the test, the patient breathes into a mouthpiece connected to a spirometer, following specific breathing instructions such as deep inhalation and forceful exhalation. The device records various parameters including lung volumes, airflow rates, and overall lung function.

PFT is widely used to diagnose and monitor respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchitis, and other lung disorders. It also helps assess the effect of medications and is commonly used in pre-operative evaluations.

The test is safe, quick, and non-invasive, typically completed within 15–30 minutes, and provides valuable insights into respiratory health.

This test is recommended for individuals with respiratory symptoms or known lung conditions.

• Shortness of breath
