Tests Details :

GASTRIN LEVEL – SERUM

This Test is a blood test used to measure the level of gastrin, a hormone that stimulates the stomach to produce acid. Gastrin plays an important role in digestion, but abnormal levels may indicate underlying medical conditions.

Elevated gastrin levels can be associated with conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (gastrinoma), chronic gastritis, or prolonged use of acid-suppressing medications. Low levels are less common but may also have clinical significance.

The purpose of this test is to:

  • Measure gastrin hormone levels in the blood
  • Diagnose conditions causing excessive stomach acid production
  • Help detect Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (gastrinoma)
  • Evaluate recurrent or unexplained peptic ulcers
  • Support assessment of gastric function

GASTRIN LEVEL – SERUM Test

The Gastrin Level – Serum test measures the amount of gastrin, a hormone produced mainly by specialized cells in the stomach. Gastrin helps regulate the production of stomach acid and plays an important role in digestion.

The test is primarily used when a healthcare provider suspects excessive gastrin production, particularly in conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES) and gastrinoma. It may also be useful in evaluating achlorhydria (very low or absent stomach acid) and pernicious anemia, both of which can cause elevated gastrin levels.

An elevated gastrin level does not automatically indicate a gastrinoma. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), chronic atrophic gastritis, pernicious anemia, reduced stomach acid, kidney disease, and other conditions can also increase gastrin. Therefore, the result should be interpreted along with symptoms, medication history, stomach acid assessment, and other investigations when required.

GASTRIN LEVEL – SERUM TEST IS RECOMMENDED FOR INDIVIDUALS:

  • Individuals with suspected Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
  • People being evaluated for gastrinoma
  • Patients with recurrent, severe, or difficult-to-treat peptic ulcers
  • Individuals with unexplained excessive stomach acid production
  • People with suspected achlorhydria or hypochlorhydria
  • Individuals being evaluated for pernicious anemia
  • Patients with persistently elevated gastrin levels requiring further investigation
  • People with recurrent gastrointestinal symptoms despite treatment
  • Individuals whose healthcare provider recommends evaluation of gastrin-producing disorders

FAQs

1. What does a high Gastrin Level indicate?
An elevated gastrin level can occur when the stomach produces little or no acid, such as with atrophic gastritis or pernicious anemia, or when gastrin production is abnormally high, as in Zollinger-Ellison syndrome/gastrinoma. Certain medicines, especially PPIs, can also raise gastrin levels.

2. Do I need to fast before a Serum Gastrin test?
Yes. Fasting is generally required, with many laboratories recommending an overnight fast of around 8–12 hours. Because acid-reducing medicines can significantly affect gastrin levels, your healthcare provider may give specific instructions regarding PPIs and other medicines. Do not stop prescribed medication without medical advice.

3. Can acidity medicines affect the Gastrin test?
Yes. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as omeprazole, pantoprazole, and esomeprazole can increase gastrin levels. H2-receptor blockers can also affect results. Your healthcare provider will determine whether and when these medicines should be temporarily withheld before testing.
