Tests Details :
MRI – Temporo-Mandibular Joints (TMJ) is a highly advanced imaging technique that provides detailed visualization of the jaw joints, where the lower jaw (mandible) connects to the skull. Using strong magnetic fields and radio waves, this scan captures high-resolution images of the joint structures, including the articular disc, cartilage, ligaments, muscles, and surrounding soft tissues.
This imaging is particularly valuable in diagnosing temporo-mandibular joint disorders (TMD), which may involve disc displacement, joint inflammation, degeneration, or structural abnormalities. MRI is the preferred modality for evaluating the position and movement of the joint disc both at rest and during jaw motion, helping to identify conditions that may not be visible on X-rays or CT scans.
The test is commonly recommended for patients experiencing symptoms such as jaw pain, clicking or popping sounds, locking of the jaw, headaches, or difficulty in opening and closing the mouth. It also plays an important role in detecting arthritis, joint effusion (fluid accumulation), trauma-related injuries, and tumors affecting the TMJ region.
The procedure is non-invasive, painless, and does not involve exposure to ionizing radiation, making it a safe and reliable diagnostic tool for repeated use if necessary.
The purpose of this MRI – Temporo-Mandibular Joints (TMJ) test is to:
- Evaluate jaw pain and discomfort
- Detect disc displacement or joint abnormalities
- Identify inflammation or arthritis
- Assess restricted jaw movement or locking
- Examine muscles and ligaments around the joint
- Diagnose TMJ disorders
